BSOD or the Blue Screen of Death - How to fix it?

BSOD or the Blue Screen of Death, (also known as blue screen physical memory dump), is an error that occurs on a Windows system - when the computer just shuts down or automatically reboots. This error can occur just as your computer is booting up or some Windows application is running. When the Windows OS discovers an unrecoverable error it hangs the system or leads to memory dumps.

In the blue screen physical memory dump situation there is a whole set of diagnostic information that gets displayed on a blue screen (which is the name). You can dump the PCs memory contents into a dump file and this can be analysed later to figure out the root cause for the problem.

Software errors or hardware errors that happen when running Windows and intermittent errors are the general reasons for a blue screen physical memory dump. New software or drivers that have been installed or changes in the registry settings are the typical s/w causes. Intermittent errors refer to failed system memory/ hard disk or over heated processor and these too could cause the blue screen physical memory dump error.

There are some solutions for each of the above problems. Before trying them out however, you could try running registry cleaners on your computer. A Windows registry is a list of entries about software/ hardware and other system related information that the OS uses. This could get corrupted when the computer has been used for some time. Registry cleaners can clean this list effectively and resolve this issue. If this step fails, you could try out the following:

1.    S/w related error handling - If the blue screen physical memory dump happens after the installation of s/w application or a driver it could be that there is system incompatibility. By booting into safe mode and removing the software you can quickly fix this error. You could also try out a "system restore" to revert to an earlier state.

2.    H/w related error handling - when hardware causes BSOD installing latest fixes for the hardware and/ or motherboard can help. You could also add new hardware that is compatible with the system.

3.    Handling intermittent errors - when there is a message to the effect that "memory or hard disk is malfunctioning", you could put in new hardware to replace the defective part until the actual problem is found out. There are h/w diagnostic programs to identify the faulty portions.
