TR/Patched.Ren.Gen is a fake anti-virus product that infects your computer and tries to scare you into buying it. The scans generated by this fake program look very real and they identify several fake entries as infections. The goal is to convince you into thinking that you need this program in order to remove these critical items that were detected in the scan. Additionally, TR/Patched.Ren.Gen modifies your registry in order to block access to many of your programs, including your anti-virus program. This infection also alters your Windows default settings and lowers your system's security settings to allow unsigned programs to run, basically telling your computer that it is OK to run any program, even malicious ones. Another common symptom is that your search results may become redirect to unrelated websites, this is because the trojan also modifies your hosts file. Below are steps you can take to remove TR/Patched.Ren.Gen.
Hit the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys on your keyboard (all 3 at the same time). This will bring up your task manager.
In task manager, click on the processes tab.
Locate any process starting with a capital PI, followed by random numbers, example PI267_14.exe. Click on this process and click the End Process button.
After ending the process, you should now be able to update your existing anti-virus program and run a full scan. Make sure you do not turn off your computer until after you have completed the scan, otherwise the process will start up again when Windows restart, in which case you have to repeat the above steps.
